Restore the Reef. Honour the Departed.
Preserving once-prime coral reef in the Gili Islands through sustainable underwater memorials.
The Problem
The Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — were once home to some of Indonesia's most spectacular coral reef. Decades of climate change, unsustainable tourism, anchoring damage, and pollution have degraded vast sections of this marine habitat.
Coral cover has declined dramatically. Fish populations have shifted. The reef that once drew divers from across the world is a shadow of its former self.
Reef of Remembrance was founded on a simple premise: what if the act of remembrance could directly fund the reef's recovery?
Our Solution
We secure and restore 12 hectares of degraded reef off the Gili Islands. Marine concrete memorial statues — designed with pH-neutral materials — are placed as artificial reef structures that attract coral settlement and marine life.
Revenue from memorial plot sales, hotel operations, diving tours, weddings, and live camera subscriptions funds:
- Coral propagation and transplantation
- Reef cleaning and maintenance dives
- Underwater camera cleaning and replacement
- Marine biology monitoring programmes
- Anti-anchoring reef protection markers
- Local community employment & training
The Gili Islands
Three idyllic islands between Bali and Lombok — no cars, crystal waters, and a diving heritage worth protecting.
"By selling enough slots to our underwater reef, we aim to preserve and secure some once-prime but degraded coral reef — giving people a chance to do good in the world while creating a lasting, beautiful memorial for those they love."
